How I Make a Pie Crust

If the title of this post wasn't explanatory enough, through a short series of videos I will demonstrate how I make pie crust.

And because I'm an amateur at making videos and I'm positive that the sound is terrible, I'll help you out in text form as well!

So to begin with here's my recipe:

2 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
2/3 cup + 2 TBS butter Crisco
1/4 cup ice cold water (plus 1 TBS if needed)

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and stir together. Add Crisco and using a pastry cuttter, cut ingredients together until well blended and crumbly. Put in the refrigerator overnight or if lacking time you can stick it in the freezer for 20-30 minutes.

After removing from the fridge you will add 1/4 cup of ice cold water. Add slowly, stirring constantly with a fork. Your crumbles start sticking together and getting bigger. You might need an extra tablespoon of water. Form a ball with your dough and pat until it is nice and tight. Cut in half. Pat smooth again and you are ready to start rolling it out.

Liberally sprinkle flour on your rolling surface. Place your first ball of dough on the floured surface and sprinkle more flour on the dough. Flour your rolling pin and begin rolling it out. It helps to go at it from all angles to keep it evenly round. Roll it out until it is about 1/8" thick.
Being mindful that it isn't too sticky, roll it up in a loose log form. This will make transferring it to your pie plate easier. Once it is rolled up place it on one side of your pie plate with the edge hanging over quite a bit. When it is in place you can take a pair of kitchen shears and trim around the edges, leaving enough overhang for pinching. Using your thumbs and your forefingers go around the edge pinching the dough in a decorative way. When this is done you are ready to add your pie filling. Make sure to cover the outside edges of your crust with tinfoil or a special protective cover before you put it in the oven... this will prevent it from burning!

Congratulations on making a pie crust!

ETA: I just found this other video that is lots better than mine! :) Happy Pie Making!

November Sunrise

Unlike the Proverbs 31 woman,
I am not a morning person.

But being the mother of school-age children
and living in the sticks
makes getting up while it is yet dark a requirement.

On the bright side- sometimes I catch a really great sunrise!

And then I ship the kids out the door and go back to bed!
