It was love at first sight, really.
Several weeks ago I was driving down our dirt road and noticed this handsome fellow. Actually, I thought he was cute. Even adorable ... as I later told my husband. I asked him what kind of "cow" he thought it might be as I related that it was white-ish and had curly hair. He knew what group of cattle I was talking about and the first thing he informed me was that it was likely not a cow... but rather a bull. OK, so we're talking boy-cow here (which, for the record, there is no such thing- since a cow is specifically referring to an adult female bovine that has had a calf).
"Anyways" , I said, "He's CUTE! Is that ok? Can I call a boy-cow cute???"
"Call him whatever you want, but remember he's a bull and he's probably not safe.
So don't go trying to pet him or anything."
Oh, and he also guessed my new admir-ee to be a Charolais.
So I've admired from a distance whenever I drive by.
But today I had my camera in tow.
I pulled off to the side of the road and started clicking away.
He must have thought I was going to do something to his advantage
because he got up and took a few steps in my direction.
"Man, he's cute!", I thought... searching the ground for any treats I could give him.
I wondered if he would come eat out of my hand.
I remembered there was an ear of corn in the door of my Suburban
(we're farmers, this is normal).
I approached the fence (single line of electric wire) with the ear of corn and held it out to him. "Here, cute bully-bull ~ come get some corn! You know you want to!"
He did not come. I tossed it out for him and he took it.
I named him "Buddy".
ISN'T HE ADORABLE?!?!?
